My 2004 translation of John’s gospel begins at Start With John, along with a brief explanation of my interpretive approach.

1 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Messiah has been born of god, and everyone who loves the one who generated, loves [also, sic] the one generated by him. 2 By this we know that we love the children of god, when we love god and keep his commands. 3 For this is the love of god, that we should keep his commands and his commands are not burdensome. 4 Because everyone who has been born of god is victorious in the world; and this is the victory which triumphs in the world – our faith. 5 Who is the one who prevails in the world if not the one who believes that Jesus is the son of god?

This is the one who comes through water and blood, Jesus Christ, not by the water only but by the water and by the blood; and the spirit is the witness because the spirit is the truth. 7 οτι there are three witnesses, 8 the spirit and the water and the blood, and the three are in one. 9 If we receive the witness of men, the witness of god is greater; οτι this is the witness of god, that he has borne witness [by his spirit] concerning his son. 10 The one who believes in the son of god has this witness [i.e. the spirit] in himself, the one who does not believe in god makes him [god] a liar, because he has not believed in the witness [i.e. the spirit] [by] which god has borne witness concerning his son. 11 And this is the witness, that god has given us eternal life, and this life is in his son. 12 The one who has the son has the life; the one who does not have the son of god does not have the life.

I wrote these things to you in order that you should know that you have eternal life, [that is] those who believe in the name of the son of god. 14 And this is the freedom which we have before him, that if we should ask something according to his will he hears us, 15 and if we know that he hears us [concerning] whatever we might ask, we know that we have the requests which we have asked from him.

Whoever should see his brother sinning a sin [which is] not unto death, let him ask and he will give him [eternal] life, [that is] to the one sinning not unto death. There is a deadly sin; I am not saying that he should ask concerning that [sin]. 17 Every sin is an offence, but [not every] sin is unto death.

We know that everyone [who is] generated of god does not sin, rather the one born of god heeds him [several variants read, ‘guards himself’] and wickedness does not gain hold of him. 19 We know that we are of god and [that] the whole entire universe is fallen into wickedness. 20 We know that the son of god has come and has given us a disposition to know the truth, and we are in the truth in his son Jesus Christ. This is the truth, [he is] god and eternal life. 21 Children, watch yourselves [‘be on guard against,’ ‘stay away from’] idols.
